The Prairie Goat Ultra is a multi-discipline endurance event taking place in the Acton Recreation Area near Broadview, Montana. Scheduled for May 8–9, 2026, the race features a dual-track structure where participants can choose between mountain biking and trail running. The event is hosted on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, offering a primitive and rugged environment for athletes to test their limits over various timed durations.
Event Formats and Start TimesThe competition is organized into specific time windows, allowing individuals and teams to complete as many laps as possible within their chosen category. While the mountain biking events are concentrated on Saturday, the running events include a premiere 24-hour overnight challenge.
| Discipline | Duration | Start Time |
|---|---|---|
| Trail Run | 24 Hours | Friday, May 8 (7:00 PM) |
| Bike & Run | 12 Hours | Saturday, May 9 (7:00 AM) |
| Trail Run | 6 Hours | Saturday, May 9 (1:00 PM) |
| Trail Run | 3 Hours | Saturday, May 9 (4:00 PM) |
The geography of the Acton Recreation Area consists of high-plains terrain characterized by single-track trails through sagebrush and technical sandstone features. Mountain bikers compete on an approximately 8-mile course known for fast descents and steady climbs; notably, E-bikes are permitted and have their own dedicated award category. Runners utilize a separate 4-mile loop featuring gentle elevation changes. In early May, the Broadview region typically experiences cool to mild spring weather, with average daytime highs of 16°C (61°F) and nighttime lows dropping to 3°C (37°F). Overnight runners are required to use headlamps and reflective gear for the 24-hour segment.
Logistically, the event promotes a "primitive" experience. The race site on Heag Road has no running water or electricity, requiring participants to bring all necessary supplies for camping and self-sufficiency. However, the organizers provide a central aid station with basic nutrition, water, and hot meals, including soup and coffee for those running through the night. The event concludes on Saturday evening with a communal free meal for all participants. Profits and participation help support the maintenance of the local trail systems outside of Billings.
