Spearfish Canyon Kilo

The Kilo Race returns to Spearfish Canyon on November 7, 2026, marking its revival by the Black Hills Runners Club after being dormant for several years. This prestigious race has deep roots in South Dakota's running community, tracing back to its inception in 1968 when it was first organized by Dave Little, a pioneering coach at BHSU.
The event is set against the stunning backdrop of Spearfish Canyon and starts from the historic Homestake power plant, located eight miles up the canyon. Participants will navigate through picturesque terrain as they cover the challenging yet rewarding 15-kilometer distance. The race route offers runners an unforgettable blend of natural beauty and rigorous elevation changes.
Registration for this year's Kilo is $25 (with a discount available to BHRC members), while those aged 16 and under can participate free but won't receive swag items. Carpooling from City Park in Spearfish, where check-in begins at 8:30 am on the day of the race, is highly recommended due to limited parking.
The Kilo has a storied history with appearances in Sports Illustrated during its heyday and consistent coverage by local media like the Rapid City Journal. Over the years, it attracted hundreds of participants and featured some of South Dakota's most accomplished runners. Its revival promises to bring back that sense of community and competition for both seasoned athletes and newcomers alike.
