Southern Ocean Classic Mile

The SunSmart Southern Ocean Classic Mile is a premier open-water swimming event scheduled for Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, at Ocean Beach in Denmark, WA, Australia. Organized by the Denmark Surf Life Saving Club, this 1,600m swim challenges participants to navigate the pristine but powerful waters of the Southern Ocean. The event is a highlight of the local Easter festivities, drawing competitive swimmers and coastal enthusiasts to one of Western Australia’s most scenic regional beaches.

Participation and Logistics

The swim takes place at Ocean Beach, with all entered swimmers required to check in at the Denmark Surf Club by 9:30 AM on race morning. For safety and fairness, the event has strict gear regulations: no watches or heavy jewelry may be worn. While wetsuits are permitted for thermal comfort, wearers will not be eligible for podium prizes. To ensure a clear and safe course, personal paddlers are not allowed, as the dedicated water safety crew manages the well-being of all participants. In addition to the main race, the club hosts a special fundraiser the day prior, with all proceeds supporting the Surf Life Saving Club’s operations.

Prizes and Awards

Thanks to local sponsors like The Floating Forest Denmark, significant cash prizes are available for the top finishers. First-place male and female swimmers will each receive $300, with additional cash awards for second and third place, as well as $30 prizes for winners in specific age groups. Participants who register by Sunday, March 29th, are also entered into an early bird draw for a three-night stay at the Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park, valued at $700.

Registration and Fees

Standard online registration is available for $70 and includes an event race shirt. Late registration begins on Monday, March 30, 2026, with the fee increasing to $80; however, race shirts cannot be guaranteed for late entries. Online registration officially closes on Friday, April 3rd.
