The Somerset LDWA Jurassic Hundred Qualifier is designed to welcome both newcomers and seasoned members of the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) while offering an opportunity for qualification for the prestigious 2027 LDWA Jurassic hundred. Held amidst the vibrant autumn hues of West Somerset, this event promises a scenic journey through diverse landscapes.
Participants will embark on a challenging 51-mile route divided into two loops, each starting and finishing at Crowcombe Village Hall. The first loop ventures towards the majestic Brendon Hills, while the second explores the rolling hills of the Quantocks. Both routes feature significant elevation gain, totaling around 8000 feet, making it essential for entrants to have completed a minimum distance of 30 miles in one day within the past year.
The event accommodates both walkers and faster-paced runners with staggered start times: an early morning 08:30 AM start for those adhering to a slower pace (maximum speed of 4 mph), followed by a later 10:30 AM start for more ambitious participants. This timing ensures that all competitors can navigate the remote trails safely, especially during autumn's shorter daylight hours.
To enhance safety and ensure compliance with mandatory kit requirements, entrants must wear live trackers throughout the event. A comprehensive list of necessary equipment is available on the Cornwall and Devon LDWA website and will be reviewed at registration. Participants are also subject to a route check for their gear; those found lacking any items from this essential checklist risk disqualification.
Given limited parking facilities in Crowcombe Village Hall, organizers encourage carpooling among entrants to minimize traffic congestion and environmental impact. Detailed maps and GPX files of the course will be made available two weeks prior to the event date.
To secure a place at this qualifier, interested individuals must first enter via pre-selection lists without an initial payment obligation. Successful applicants will receive an email invitation to confirm their entry with full payment within the specified period.
