The Skeetawk Scramble returns to Palmer, Alaska on August 28th, kicking off a weekend of mountain running events set against the backdrop of the stunning Hatcher Pass Recreation Area. This year's event offers participants an array of challenging courses ranging from short and steep uphill sprints for youth runners to grueling multi-day runs through some of Alaska’s most scenic terrain.
Runners will gather at Skeetawk Ski Area, where they’ll start their ascents up Frostbite Ridge on Friday evening with the Vertical Kilometer (VK), scaling nearly 3000 feet over three miles. The starting point and finish line for each race are carefully chosen to highlight both the rugged beauty of Alaska’s landscape and its rigorous trails.
For those who wish to experience multiple challenges, weekend passes allow runners to tackle a variety of distances that test endurance and agility across diverse terrains like Government Peak and Halibut Tail Ridge. The event supports local community initiatives and draws participants from around the country for an annual tradition now in its fifth year.
The course traverses steep climbs with significant elevation changes, making use of established trails such as Frostbite Ridge and Blueberry Knoll-to-Government Peak Trail. A 12K mountain loop on Saturday features a grueling ascent followed by exhilarating descents back to Skeetawk Ski Area, while Sunday’s main event is the challenging 37K "Skeetawk Skyline Scramble," one of only four official US Skyrunning races.
Morning temperatures in August typically range from mild to moderate with clear skies and firm trail conditions. UV index levels can be moderate at around 3.5, so runners should consider sun protection measures during their early morning starts on both Saturday and Sunday.
