The Shawnee Hills Trail Races return on Saturday, August 21, 2027, inviting trail runners to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Southern Illinois' Shawnee National Forest. This year's edition promises an unforgettable adventure through rugged terrain and pristine natural beauty at Camp Ondessonk. Set against a backdrop of towering sandstone formations and lush oak-hickory forests, the race routes wind through Jackson Hollow, Bay Creek Reservoir, and Salomon’s Ridge. Runners will encounter several waterfalls along their journey, including Pakentuck Falls—the tallest free-falling waterfall in Illinois—as well as Horseshoe Falls, Cedar Falls, and more. The course features a challenging figure-eight loop with approximately 80% singletrack dirt trail and intermittent fire roads. The terrain is highly technical, featuring rocks, roots, ruts, and creek crossings that test the mettle of even seasoned ultrarunners. Elevation changes range from moderate to steep rollers, adding an extra layer of challenge. Participants can choose among several distances: - 100 Mile: A grueling 3-loop course with a short prologue. - 100K: Two loops around the scenic trails. - 50K: One loop for those seeking a more manageable yet equally rewarding experience. - Half Marathon: An "heavy half" that includes an additional camp loop before venturing onto the main trail. The race begins at Camp Ondessonk and features strict time limits, with cut-off times designed to ensure runners' safety. Pacers are allowed only for 100-mile and 100K races but must adhere to specific regulations including a waiver requirement. Aid stations stocked with water, electrolyte drinks, snacks, first aid supplies, and cheering volunteers will be strategically placed along the route every five miles or less. The start/finish line at Camp Ondessonk also serves as an essential hub for restrooms and pre-race check-in services. All registered runners receive a custom event shirt in their preferred fit (unisex or women's cut), adding to the race-day excitement.
