The Samarkand Marathon stands out as one of Central Asia's premier sporting events, celebrated annually with an array of activities that cater to runners of all ages and interests. The main race day is accompanied by concerts, plogging runs aimed at environmental conservation, children’s races, and guided tours showcasing the city's rich cultural heritage. Competitors have a variety of distances to choose from: the full marathon (42.2 km), half-marathon (21.1 km), 10K, 5K, or a shorter 2K fun run for those looking to enjoy Samarkand’s scenic beauty without committing to longer races. Nordic walking is also an option available at select distances. The race route weaves through the heart of historic Samarkand, passing by ancient mosques and madrasahs that tell stories of centuries past. Runners will experience traditional mahallas — vibrant neighborhoods with a unique architectural style — while enjoying panoramic views of Registan Square's iconic blue domes from various vantage points along their journey. Officially measured to World Athletics standards, the Samarkand Marathon is certified by AIMS and recognized as part of the Age Group World Marathon Majors series. It also holds accreditation from She Races, a platform dedicated to women in running, and is a key event within the TAN series — an initiative fostering competitive spirit among runners across Central Asia and the Caucasus region. This marathon offers more than just competition; it’s an immersive experience that celebrates Samarkand's cultural richness while promoting health and environmental awareness.
