The Rim to River 100 returns to New River Gorge, West Virginia on October 24th, offering runners a unique challenge through the heart of New River Gorge National Park. This event is the first and only 100-mile trail race in West Virginia, featuring an out-and-back course that winds along single-track trails and rail-to-trail paths throughout the park. Participants will traverse multiple times from the rim of the gorge to down along the banks of the New River, experiencing natural beauty including waterfalls, whitewater rapids, dramatic views, ghost towns, centuries-old cemeteries, and abandoned mine shafts.
On race morning, runners can expect a mix of firm and slightly soft trail conditions. The average temperature in October typically ranges from 8.3°C to 19.1°C with an average wind speed of 10.4 km/h. Humidity is generally around 73.5%, and the risk of light precipitation, averaging about 1.7mm, adds a layer of unpredictability to the race day experience. The UV index averages at 4.0 (moderate), requiring participants to consider sun protection.
Since its inception in 2026, Rim to River 100 has become an important event for endurance runners and outdoor enthusiasts alike. As part of Adventure Appalachia’s programming efforts, proceeds from race registrations support empowering educational experiences for adolescents and adults through various adventure activities facilitated by the non-profit organization. Participants have three days to complete the course, with all finishers receiving a custom Rim to River 100 belt buckle and finisher mug. Runners who manage to cross the line in under 24 hours will earn an additional special sub-24 belt buckle.
