Quest for the Crest

The Quest for the Crest is widely considered one of the most technical and difficult trail races in the Eastern United States. Held in the Black Mountains near Burnsville, North Carolina, the 2026 edition is scheduled for May 16–17, 2026. Organized by Run Bum Races, the event is currently adapting to significant trail modifications following the impact of Hurricane Helene in the South Toe area. While some routes have changed, the race maintains its reputation for extreme vertical gain and rugged, high-altitude terrain.

The race is split into two primary distances. Due to the difficulty of the terrain, finishing times are significantly longer than standard trail races of the same distance.

Runners are explicitly warned that this should not be their first trail race. The terrain is "ruggedly extreme," often requiring participants to be on all fours to navigate boulder fields and steep washouts.

• - Pace Expectations: Organizers suggest doubling your typical PR for the distance. Much of the course involves power-hiking up and navigating boulders on the descent.
• - Post-Hurricane Conditions: Over half of the trails are clear, but infrastructure is still being rebuilt. The 2026 route will feature slight variations from past years but will continue to offer massive vertical climbing and summit views.
• - Self-Sufficiency: Runners must be prepared to filter their own water at times and handle deep-wilderness conditions with limited immediate support.

Because of the remote nature of the start line, all participants are required to use the provided mandatory shuttle service to reach the starting area.

• - Runner Swag: All participants receive a pint glass, a hat or beanie, and free professional race photos. All 50K finishers receive a commemorative medal.
• - Registration: Closes on Saturday, May 16. The race has a strict 90-day no-refund policy, though full credits are offered for pregnancy or military orders (valid for two years).

The course records reflect the sheer difficulty of the terrain. Morgan Elliott holds the modern benchmark for the 50K with a time of 5:59:10, a pace that highlights the technicality involved compared to flatter ultra-marathons.
