Pour la vue (Défi DMLA) returns to Montreal on June 28th, a day when the city’s vibrant energy and historical charm come alive for runners and walkers alike who join in support of a crucial cause. This annual event has become an integral part of Montreal’s running calendar, bringing together participants from across Quebec and beyond for a meaningful morning along scenic routes that showcase both urban landscapes and natural beauty.
The race starts early on a crisp June Saturday, the sun rising just as runners gather at Parc des Îles de Boucherville. The atmosphere is one of anticipation mixed with solidarity; everyone knows they are part of something bigger than themselves – supporting those affected by age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of functional blindness in Canada. As participants lace up their shoes, there’s a sense of community and shared purpose that permeates through the cool morning air.
Pour la vue has been running for over a decade now, each year growing stronger with more runners joining to raise awareness and funds for AMD research and support services. Over 1000 people participated in last year's edition alone, making it one of Montreal’s largest charity races. Awards are given out for various age categories across all distances offered, celebrating the achievements of both elite athletes and casual walkers who have trained tirelessly over months to be here today.
The course winds through Parc des Îles de Boucherville before heading into residential areas where historic homes line tree-lined streets under a canopy of maple leaves. The 15-kilometer route offers varied terrain, from paved paths that run alongside the St. Lawrence River to dirt trails in quieter parks further inland. Notable features include scenic bridges over small rivers and lakes within the park system, providing stunning views for participants as they progress.
Start lines are clearly marked near the parc’s main entrance with ample space for pre-race warm-ups before the race begins promptly at 8:00 AM. The start/finish area is also where aid stations will be located throughout the course to provide water and energy drinks, ensuring runners stay hydrated and fueled during their run or walk. An additional station near the halfway point offers snacks like bananas and granola bars for participants who need a quick boost.
In June in Montreal, temperatures typically hover around 20 degrees Celsius with occasional light winds; however, these conditions can vary slightly depending on daily weather patterns leading up to race day. Runners should expect an average feel of about 19-21°C (68°F), which is comfortable for exertion but may require proper layering if cooler temperatures persist in the early morning hours.
