Portland Coastal Race: A Harsh Winter Benchmark on the South West Coast Path
On Sunday, February 14, 2027, runners will converge at Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy for an unyielding coastal challenge. The Portland Coastal offers marathon, half-marathon, and a 10k race through the rugged terrain of the South West Coast Path.
This event is not for those seeking flat and fast courses; it’s designed to test your limits on exposed trails in February. Self-navigation is key as participants must download the GPX file beforehand and follow their devices without relying on route markers. Keeping the sea at either left or right, depending on which loop you're running, ensures that runners stay true to course.
The race experience includes checkpoint refreshments along with professional medical coverage for added safety. All finishers will receive a bespoke Portland Coastal medal, while top three male and female competitors in each distance earn trophies. Professional photography captures the moment of crossing the line, and an optional technical T-shirt is available for purchase at £15.
Mandatory kit requirements emphasize preparation for harsh coastal conditions: runners must carry 500ml fluid capacity, a windproof jacket (waterproof preferred), emergency nutrition, head covering, charged waterproofed mobile phone, foil blanket or full-size bin liner, whistle, and small first aid kit. Kit checks may occur before, during, and after the race, with top finishers subject to inspection.
The event caps at 500 participants; once it's full, no additional entries are accepted. To encourage participation among friends, a referral scheme rewards both referrer and referee upon entry confirmation.
