Ouray Mountain Trail Run

The Ouray Mountain Trail Run returns to Fellin Park in Ouray, Colorado on September 19th, offering a challenging yet scenic 13-mile run through the mountains. This event is hosted by the Ouray School's Parent and Teacher Organization (PATT) and the HS Outdoor Education Class as a fundraiser for educational trips funded by participant fees. The race begins at Fellin Park in downtown Ouray at 7:30 AM, winding along US Highway 550 before venturing into rugged terrain that showcases some of Colorado’s most breathtaking landscapes.
On race day morning, participants can expect brisk temperatures and cool breezes as they line up for the start. The typical September weather around Ouray features an average temperature range from 6 to 23 degrees Celsius with a moderate level of humidity at about 56%, making it ideal for endurance runners who thrive in cooler conditions. There is also a slight chance of precipitation, averaging just over half a millimeter.
Since its inception, the Ouray Mountain Trail Run has become an integral part of the community's annual calendar, attracting hundreds of participants each year since its establishment. The race not only tests physical limits but also raises funds for local educational initiatives that benefit students and teachers alike on trips to destinations like Moab, Denver, Washington DC, and Mexico.
The course itself traverses a mix of firm yet slightly soft trails, with runners starting at Fellin Park in Ouray before heading out onto US Highway 550. The route then transitions into more rugged terrain where the elevation changes become noticeable; participants must reach an aid station located approximately five miles from the start within two and a half hours to continue. Another critical checkpoint is situated about seven miles along the course, which all runners have three hours to arrive at or face disqualification.
Weather conditions on race day typically range between 6°C and 23.6°C with average winds of around 7.3 kilometers per hour. The trail surface will be firm but slightly soft underfoot due to recent activity levels in the area, providing a mix of challenge and comfort for runners.

Participants must register online at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=130351 before August 1st to secure their entry fee of $90 and guarantee an athletic t-shirt if they opt in during registration, which costs extra but can be purchased for a discounted rate. Packet pickup is available on Friday evening from Fellin Park between 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM or early Saturday morning before the race starts.
Race day begins at 1001 US Highway 550 in Ouray, Colorado where runners of all ages are welcome to compete. The only exception is for Ouray County students and staff who can participate free-of-charge by emailing [email protected] for a coupon code. No refunds or transfers will be given under any circumstances due to the nature of this CUPLESS event.
