Opal’s Walk for Freedom - Honolulu

A 2.5‑mile walk celebrating Juneteenth and honoring Ms. Opal Lee — the "Grandmother of Juneteenth." Due to recent storms, registration this year is free for kamaʻāina (Hawaii residents) in support of the islands. Free for all youth 18 and under as well.

The Walk — History & Symbolism:

• 2.5 miles represents the 2.5 years between the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863) and June 19, 1865 — the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce freedom for enslaved people
• Ms. Opal Lee, a former teacher and activist from Fort Worth, Texas, walked from her home to Washington, D.C. at age 89 to advocate for Juneteenth as a national holiday
• Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021
• Honolulu's walk continues her legacy of freedom, unity, and community action — across the Pacific, connecting African American history with Hawaii's own diverse cultural heritage

Location — Ala Moana Beach Park:

• Ala Moana Beach Park is a 76‑acre park between Waikīkī and downtown Honolulu, fronting a calm, reef‑protected beach
• Start/finish near the park's central lawn area (specific location details on event website)
• 2.5‑mile route on paved walking paths along the shoreline — flat, easy, accessible for all abilities
• Sunset views over the Pacific Ocean (sunset in Honolulu on June 19 is approximately 7:15 PM — expect golden hour during the walk)
• Gentle trade winds and tropical temperatures — perfect for an evening community walk

Special Registration — Free for Kamaʻāina:

• Due to recent storms in Hawaii, registration this year is free for kamaʻāina (Hawaii residents) in support of the islands
• Free for all youth 18 and under as well
• T‑shirts available for purchase separately
• Non‑residents and those who wish to donate can register at the regular adult rate (includes t‑shirt)

• Bib pickup: on‑site starting at 5:00 PM at the park
• No refunds unless Refund Protection Program was purchased. Race management may cancel or modify the event due to unfavorable conditions — no refunds for "Acts of God" (including storms, hurricanes, etc.)
