About the Event

The NBMCA's Mattawa River Canoe Race takes place on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 7:00 AM EDT, starting at Olmsted Beach on Lakeside Drive in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, and finishing at Mattawa Island Conservation Area in the Town of Mattawa. This historic 64 km canoe/kayak/SUP race follows lakes and rivers with up to 12 portages (5 mandatory), plus a 13 km social/friendly course with only one portage.

Event Logistics & Participant Information:

Date Change: Race moved from mid‑summer to spring — water levels will be high and water will be cold.
Mandatory PFD: Life jackets must be worn throughout the entire race. No exceptions.
Shuttle: Bus shuttles participants back to the start line to pick up vehicles. No canoe trailer this year. Participants must return to the finish line to claim their canoes. Staff/volunteers stay until last canoe is claimed.
Registration Fee Includes: Race participation, race management and safety, participant medal, OMCKRA insurance fees. OMCKRA members receive an $8 refund.
Registration Deadline: Closes Friday, May 30, 2026 (for most categories). Early bird pricing ended April 30.
Participants: 73 registered to date.
Location Start: Olmsted Beach, Lakeside Drive, North Bay, ON.
Location Finish: Mattawa Island Conservation Area, Mattawa, ON.
Requirement: Follows lakes, rivers, and a few rapids. Portage requirements depend on water levels and paddler ability/skill.

64 km Categories: Recreational Women's, Men's A, Men's B, Stock C2 Men's, Stock C2 Women's/Mixed, Recreational Mixed A & B, USCA C1 Open, Pro C2 Men's, Pro C2 Mixed/Women's, Open Kayak, Open SUP, Open C1 Stock — each with specific canoe length/width/depth requirements.
13 km Categories: Recreational Family, Open Kayak, Open Recreational, Open Junior (any canoe).
Historical Twist: The race follows historic voyageur routes.
Scenic Route: Lakes, rivers, rapids, and portages through the Mattawa River corridor.
Safety Focus: Cold spring water and high water levels — PFD mandatory for all participants.
