Munkastigen Trailrun

Munkastigen Trailrun is a traditional and atmospheric endurance event scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2026, in the Tiveden forest region of Sweden. Organized by Laxå OK, the race follows a historic 15th-century path once used by monks traveling between the Ramundeboda monastery and sites in Östergötland. Often cited as one of Sweden's oldest ultramarathons, the 44-kilometer course stretches from the shores of Lake Vättern in Olshammar to the finish line in Laxå. The route traverses a magical forest landscape, and while well-marked, participants are provided with maps to assist with navigation through the wilderness terrain.

Laxå is a municipality in Örebro County, Sweden, with a population of approximately 5,700 residents. The demographic profile of Laxå municipality is approximately 89.2% Swedish-born and 10.8% foreign-born, with a significant history tied to the ironworks and logging industries. Geographically, the area is dominated by Tiveden National Park, characterized by its rugged, primeval forest and large boulders left by the glacial retreat. In late April, the climate in central Sweden is typically crisp; average highs are around 11°C (52°F) and lows can drop to 1°C (34°F). Trails may still be damp from spring thaw, requiring footwear suitable for soft ground and slippery roots.

The event provides bus transportation from the Laxå OK clubhouse to the starting line in Olshammar, departing at 9:30 AM for an 11:00 AM race start. For relay teams, transportation is included for the first runner, though teams are responsible for their own vehicle logistics for subsequent exchanges. Registration officially closes on April 13, 2026, though late entries are accepted until April 23 for an additional fee. All finishers are awarded a plaque and are served a hot meal immediately upon arrival at the clubhouse. Timing is recorded every 10 kilometers using SportIdent technology, and participants are encouraged to bring their own SI-pins or rent them from the organizers. Members of the Swedish Marathon Society (Svenska Marathonsällskapet) are eligible for a discount on their entry fee.
