Mountain Fork Half Marathon

About the Event

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Virginia’s Cumberland Mountains, the Mountain Fork Half Marathon offers an unforgettable blend of natural beauty and challenging terrain. Scheduled for Sunday, September 20, 2026, this seventh annual race invites runners to explore the scenic Mountain Fork watershed, a region known for its serene landscapes and rich history.
The event begins at the High Knob Observation Tower, located on Jefferson National Forest's Clinch Ranger District. The tower stands tall atop an elevation of 4,200 feet, offering panoramic views that stretch across five states, including distant peaks in West Virginia and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Participants will start their journey from this vantage point before descending into a series of loops through forest service roads.
The race route covers a distance of 13.6 miles, winding its way along State Route 619 and Forest Roads 238 and 704, among others. Runners can expect to encounter diverse terrain throughout the course, with significant elevation changes totaling approximately 1,600 feet over the race's duration. The route features several aid stations strategically placed at key intervals—around miles 2.3, 5, 7.8, and 11.5—to ensure runners are well-supported during their journey.
Race day activities kick off early with packet pickup from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., held at the City of Norton's Reservoir Trailhead on State Route 619. Participants will then be shuttled by Mountain Empire Older Citizens' bus service to the start line, located near the High Knob Observation Tower parking area. The race itself starts promptly at 9 a.m.
Upon completion of their run, participants return via shuttle to their vehicles and are greeted with an array of finisher medals for all who cross the line before the noon deadline. Awards will be presented to top overall male and female runners as well as masters (age 40+) winners. Age group awards are also available in five-year increments from ages 29 and under through age 60 and over.
The Mountain Fork Half Marathon not only challenges athletes with its varied terrain but also supports local trail development efforts, ensuring that the natural beauty of Virginia's Cumberland Mountains remains accessible for future generations to enjoy.
Join us on September 20th as we celebrate this iconic race in a setting where every step is rewarded by stunning vistas and a sense of achievement. For more information and updates leading up to the event, visit www.facebook.com/mtnforkhalf.
