The Mount Disappointment Mountain Race returns to Mt. Wilson, California on September 26th, challenging runners with a classic Southern California trail experience in the Angeles National Forest.
This race is set among some of the San Gabriel Mountains’ most spectacular terrain, beginning near the historic Mt. Wilson Observatory and traversing rugged singletrack trails, steep fire roads, and scenic ridge lines. The setting on race morning presents a serene yet challenging environment with towering peaks surrounding forested canyons, offering sweeping views for those who brave the climb.
Established as a favorite among seasoned trail runners in Southern California, Mt. Disappointment has a storied history of testing both leg strength and mountain savvy. Runners push their limits on technical descents and relentless climbs while enjoying fully stocked aid stations along the way. The race supports local causes through entry fees that contribute to environmental conservation efforts within Angeles National Forest.
The Mount Disappointment Mountain Race features two challenging courses: a 25K route with approximately 3,800 feet of elevation gain, delivering sweeping views and rewarding runners for their efforts; and an epic 50K ultra featuring roughly 7,000 feet of climbing over rugged terrain. Both routes wind through historic trails such as the Gabrielino, Colby Canyon, Strawberry Peak, and Kenyon Devore Trail.
The course begins near Mt. Wilson Observatory on Mount Disappointment Mountain Road in Angeles National Forest, where participants face steep climbs and technical descents through diverse forest trails. Fully stocked aid stations provide support along both routes, with breathtaking 360° summit panoramas from high saddles like Markum Saddle offering runners a moment to soak in the scenery.
Race day weather typically ranges between an average temperature of 16°C (feels-like 16°C), minimal rainfall at around 1mm on average, and moderate humidity levels. With winds averaging at 5.5 km/hour and sunlight lasting approximately eleven hours thirty-one minutes during race times in September, conditions are firm yet slightly soft underfoot.

Runners have the option to participate in either a challenging 25K with significant elevation gain or an ultra distance of 50K featuring even more technical climbs and descents. Both courses offer unique opportunities for runners seeking adventure amidst towering peaks within Angeles National Forest.
The race registration can be completed online at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=133283 with fees set at $140.00 for the 25K route and $165.00 for the 50K ultra distance. Early bird pricing is available until May 31st, after which regular registration begins.
Bib pickup will take place on race morning starting from 7:00 AM at Mt Wilson Circle Road in Mt Wilson where participants can collect their bibs and any additional information needed before heading out onto the course. Participants should bring a valid photo ID for identification purposes during pick-up times.
