Morcote Scal

The 4th Annual Morcote Scal’ is a unique, high-intensity stair-climbing competition held in the picturesque village of Morcote, Switzerland. Scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM, the race transforms the "Pearl of Lake Ceresio" into a vertical arena. Participants face a grueling ascent of 420 historic steps leading from Piazza Granda to the monumental Church of Santa Maria del Sasso, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Lugano for those who reach the summit.

The competition is strictly limited to 100 adult participants and operates on a direct elimination heat system rather than a traditional clock-based format. Runners are drawn into 20 batteries of five people each; the top two from each heat advance, while others move into playoff rounds, ensuring everyone climbs at least twice. This year introduces KidScal’, a new category specifically for children aged 9 to 12.

Morcote is located in the Canton of Ticino, the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland. Once a tiny fishing village, Morcote was voted the "most beautiful village in Switzerland" in 2016. Its architecture is characterized by patrician houses, medieval arcades, and a lush subtropical climate that allows Mediterranean flora to thrive. According to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, Morcote has a population of approximately 730 residents. The demographic is international, with about 38% of the population being non-Swiss nationals, reflecting its status as a highly desirable residential and tourist destination. The median household income in this region is among the highest in Switzerland, with a strong economy based on tourism, services, and luxury real estate.

The local culture is a sophisticated blend of Swiss efficiency and Italian dolce vita. The Morcote Scal’ itself was conceived by local resident Pierre Derrien, who drew inspiration from Olympic disciplines to turn his personal training route into a community event. The 2026 edition features a special guest appearance by Italian cycling legend Domenico Pozzovivo. The event is deeply integrated with the community, utilizing the Spazio Garavello 7—a stunning panoramic terrace—for the post-race "Pasta Party." This vertical race has quickly become a point of pride for Morcote, symbolizing the town's rugged geography and its commitment to sustainable, active living.

Morcote Scal’ places a high value on social responsibility and environmental sustainability. For every registration, 1 CHF is donated to the Fondazione Amilcare, a non-profit organization in Ticino that supports adolescents in difficulty by providing them with educational centers and protection services. Furthermore, all participants receive a sustainable finisher's medal made of wood, aligning with the event’s eco-conscious philosophy.

As of early April, 67 participants have already secured their spots. Athletes benefit from free parking at the Garavello parking garage and a fully inclusive experience that ends with community dining. Note that on-site registration is not allowed on race day, emphasizing the exclusive, carefully managed nature of this vertical challenge. On May 2nd, the narrow streets of Morcote will echo with the energy of runners climbing toward one of the most beautiful views in the Alps, all while supporting a vital cause for Ticino’s youth.
