McDonald Forest

The McDonald Forest 50K, affectionately known as "The Mac," celebrates its 30th anniversary on Saturday, May 2, 2026. As one of Oregon's oldest and most respected ultra-marathons, the race offers an "old school" experience through the lush, well-maintained singletrack of Oregon State University’s McDonald Forest. This non-profit event, organized by the Corvallis Area Trailrunners, directs all proceeds to local youth cross-country teams, mountain rescue units, and forest research.

The geography of the course is defined by its ascent to McCulloch Peak, the highest point in the McDonald Forest, providing expansive views of the Cascade Range, the Coast Range, and the Soap Creek Valley. Runners move through a diverse ecosystem that, in early May, features blooming dogwoods and calypso orchids. The terrain is famously technical yet smooth, concluding with a unique downhill finish on a soft "cushion" of pine needles. In early May, Corvallis typically experiences mild, damp spring weather with average highs of 18°C (64°F), though the forest canopy can retain significant moisture, making the trails potentially slick. Logistically, the 2026 race is a cupless event, requiring runners to carry their own hydration vessels. Registration includes four well-stocked aid stations, a post-race meal of soup and bread, and a substantial swag package consisting of a Territory Run hoody, race shirt, and Injinji socks. To increase accessibility, the race partners with the Trail Mix Fund, which waives entry fees for members of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and LGBTQ+ communities. The 50K is also a flagship event in the Corvallis Trail Series, contributing to a season-long points competition for regional trail runners. Top performance history is led by Max King, who set the course record of 3:54:06 in 2011.
