Marathonkids Ireland

Marathon Kids Ireland is an 8-week initiative aimed at encouraging children to engage in physical activity through running, jogging, or walking. Over this period, participants gradually increase their distance until they collectively cover a full marathon (26.2 miles). The programme emphasizes inclusivity and accessibility for all abilities, focusing on developing fitness, confidence, resilience, and a love of exercise.
Each student receives an interactive workbook in both English and Irish to track progress and engage with the curriculum content that aligns with SPHE standards. Teachers are provided with comprehensive support materials, including weekly lesson plans, activity resources, and video content from Marathon Kids Ireland Ambassador David Gillick, who is also a former European Athletics Champion and Olympian.
The programme covers various topics such as healthy hearts, physical benefits of exercise, mental wellbeing, social connections, community involvement, hydration, nutrition, and the educational advantages of being physically active. As students progress through these lessons, they celebrate their milestones with personalized achievements along the way.
To culminate this journey, all participating schools come together for a special event on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, at Morton Stadium. Here, children will complete their final mile in an inspiring stadium setting, surrounded by peers and mentors who have supported them throughout the programme. This celebratory finale is designed to highlight each student's dedication and accomplishments with a Marathon Kids Ireland t-shirt and medal for every participant.
The event promises not only physical challenges but also a vibrant atmosphere filled with camaraderie and celebration of young athletes' hard work over eight weeks.
