The 2026 edition of this challenging race returns to the scenic fields and rugged hills surrounding Carnethy, offering runners an unforgettable blend of natural beauty and technical navigation. Set for October 10th, participants will embark on a 17-kilometer (10.5 miles) course with over 745 meters (2450 feet) of elevation gain. The race begins in the registration field at NT 212395, where competitors gather before setting off southwest across minor roads and fields toward Hunt Hill and Skye Hill. The route then ascends into Glack Hope via a gap or temporary stile in the drystone wall at NT 205378—a mandatory crossing point—before reaching the summit gate of the John Buchan Way. From there, runners follow vehicle tracks along the march dyke over White Knowe and Whitelaw Hill to Dead Wife’s Grave (NT 189351). The course continues parallel to this boundary marker until it reaches Scrape hill at NT 176325. At an elevation of 2348 feet, runners must call out their race numbers upon reaching the summit before retracing their steps back along the same route. Shoulders and ridges offer stunning views as participants navigate through diverse terrain that includes stone walls, stiles, and open fields. The course is known for its self-navigation requirements; although some sections may be marked with intervals depending on weather conditions, competitors must rely heavily on their own map-reading skills throughout the race. In case of adverse weather, an alternative route will be provided where runners turn back earlier at NT 181332. Any adjustments to the course are communicated clearly before the start and monitored by marshals stationed along key points. The event is part of the larger Manor Sheepdog Trial festivities, providing a unique setting for both racing enthusiasts and spectators alike. Runners should come prepared with full safety gear including waterproof jackets (with taped seams), overtrousers, hats, gloves, maps, compasses, and whistles as required by Scottish Hill Runners guidelines. Registration takes place in the same field used for sheepdog trials at NT 212395. Competitors are encouraged to bring cash for refreshments available on site during race day. This event promises a test of endurance and skill against the backdrop of Scotland’s dramatic landscapes, inviting runners to immerse themselves in both physical challenge and natural beauty.
