Little Bitty Backyard

The Little Bitty Backyard returns to the Wildlands Conservancy South Mountain Preserve in Emmaus, Pennsylvania on June 13th, bringing with it a unique challenge that tests endurance through relentless loops of challenging terrain until only one runner remains standing. This event is not for the faint-hearted; each loop covers approximately 3.4 miles and includes over 350 feet of elevation change, making every lap more daunting than the last.
As dawn breaks on June 13th, runners will converge at South Mountain Preserve to begin their journey around a course that winds through rugged trails and steep climbs. The air will be crisp with early morning coolness giving way to warmer temperatures as the day progresses into late afternoon and evening. By nightfall, participants will face an additional challenge when Blackout starts—a nighttime race where visibility is minimal but determination must remain unyielding. The atmosphere at South Mountain Preserve during this event will be a blend of camaraderie and fierce competition, with spectators gathering to cheer on runners through the day’s grueling loops.
Little Bitty Backyard has been held annually since its inception, attracting endurance enthusiasts from near and far who are drawn by both the challenge and the spirit of community. Over 100 participants typically take part in this multi-day event, each setting up their own transition space to rest between laps. The organizers have partnered with Best Day Brewing for a special Beer Mile event during the day which adds another layer of excitement as runners push themselves through one final loop under the glow of night lights.
The course at South Mountain Preserve is marked by its undulating terrain and challenging climbs, ensuring that each lap presents new obstacles to overcome. Runners will start their loops precisely on the hour, with no room for error—miss your starting bell, and you're out. Aid stations are scattered along the route where runners can rest briefly before pressing onward.
