The Leaky Hourglass is an endurance challenge that pushes runners to their limits with each passing lap. The unique twist? Every subsequent lap sees the cutoff time decrease by one minute, starting at 60 minutes for the first 4.167-mile out-and-back loop and progressively getting shorter as the race progresses until only a single competitor remains capable of completing another circuit. The course is set on a rural highway that winds through rolling hills, providing approximately 250 feet of elevation gain per lap. This challenging terrain requires runners to navigate both uphills and downhills while adhering to strict time constraints. Safety measures are in place with mandatory headlamps and flashers for nighttime running due to the open course nature, where traffic is a constant presence. Aid stations offer essential support along the route: at the start/finish line, runners can find Tailwind Endurance Fuel, water, chips, pickles, candy bars, Scooby snacks, and various hot and cold options. The turnaround point features an unmanned station with prepackaged snacks in totes for easy grab-and-go refueling. For those planning their stay, the event is located 20 miles north of Springfield, Missouri, which boasts a variety of hotel accommodations. On-site primitive camping will also be available Friday and Saturday nights leading up to race day. Packet pickup occurs on August 27 from 17:00 to 20:00 at the venue, with an additional window on race morning from 07:00 to 07:45. Sponsors for this year's event include Springfield Brewing Company and Ty Iechyd Da Distillery, adding a touch of local flavor to the experience. Dogs are welcome if they are well-behaved and leashed; however, they must not be brought onto the course out of respect for nearby residents who may have their own pets. Professional race photos will be provided free of charge by Mile 90 Photography, capturing memorable moments throughout the event. With a focus on endurance and strategic pacing, The Leaky Hourglass offers an unforgettable challenge amidst scenic Missouri countryside.
