Lazy A Backyard Ultra

The Lazy A Backyard Ultra is an endurance competition based on the "Last One Standing" format, held in Udall, Kansas. Scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, the event follows the traditional backyard ultra rules popularized by Lazarus Lake. The objective is for participants to complete a set loop every hour on the hour until only one runner remains. Located at 1868 E 60th Ave N, the race emphasizes mental fortitude and pacing over raw speed, providing a supportive environment for runners to test their physical limits.

The race operates on a repetitive hourly schedule. Failure to meet the start time or finish a loop within the allotted hour results in immediate elimination.

The geography of Udall, situated in the Osage Cuesta region of Southern Kansas, consists of flat to gently rolling prairie land. The course utilizes local roadways, requiring participants to remain vigilant regarding vehicle traffic and adhere to safety protocols, including the mandatory use of reflective vests and headlamps after dark. In early May, the Kansas climate is characterized by significant variability; average daytime highs are approximately 24°C, with overnight lows dipping to 11°C. High winds and spring thunderstorms are common in this region, making gear selection for hydration and temperature regulation critical for those attempting to run through the night. To protect local farm animals, pets are strictly prohibited from the race site.

Registration for the 2026 event closes on May 5. All participants receive a race bib, a t-shirt, and a custom medallion that specifies the total number of "Yards" (laps) they completed. While the format technically results in a "Did Not Finish" for everyone except the winner, the event records and displays total mileage for all runners. The final male, female, and non-binary finishers are awarded a Lazy A railroad spike knife and a complimentary entry into the following year's race. Support crews are permitted to assist runners only between laps at the designated start/finish area, as personal assistance on the course is prohibited.
