Land and Lakes Relay

Western North Carolina's landscape becomes a moving tapestry of teamwork at the Land and Lakes Relay on February 28-March 1, 2026, where teams of 4-6 runners embark on a scenic journey from Warren Wilson College's campus to Fonta Flora Brewery's rustic Whippoorwhill Farm. Now in its fourth year, this point-to-point adventure traverses the Swannanoa Valley, Black Mountain, Lake Tomahawk, and the Geyser Growl Half Marathon course before culminating at Lake James—a meticulously redesigned route featuring legs from 2.7 to 8.7 miles that challenge while showcasing the region's natural beauty. More than a race, it's a day-long expedition where strategic leg assignments, pre-dawn safety protocols, and collective navigation define success.

With staggered 5:00-6:00 AM starts based on projected pace, mandatory reflective gear for early legs, and strict 5:00 PM cutoffs, the relay balances adventure with responsibility while awarding traditional baton trophies across multiple categories. The celebration peaks at the post-race party where teams cross together to their chosen finish-line songs, savor Fonta Flora brews, and recount stories from a relay that transforms individual runners into inseparable journey-sharers.
