You may split into 4 or 5 segments, but due to lack of access roads it is difficult to break it down much further. The shortest section is from Bigfoot Beach State Park to Lake Geneva town center(2 miles linear, 4 miles out-n-back). You can also arrange to be ferried between the towns of Fontana, Williams Bay, and Lake Geneva - so as to walk point to point rather than out-and-back. (See Lake Geneva Boat Tours for Lake Walk Shuttle Options) The Lake Geneva Lake Shore Path is a 21-mile trail of clever unique, and unforgettable hiking. It is a 2-foot wide single-track footpath encircling Geneva Lake that meanders through the yards of historic and modern estates. It is a hiking trail - a world-class hiking trail - yet a hiking trail of such unique character that it becomes instantly memorable. If you take the time to walk its full length or even a small segment of it you will own enduring memories for a lifetime. A Walk on this Trail is a watercolor masterwork come to life. As a hike, the Lake Geneva Lake Shore path is extraordinary and novel. With 21 uninterrupted lakeside miles, it is a true hike. The novelty of this hiking trail is that it crosses historic lakefront estates. Each estate owner has developed and maintained a segment of the trail with personality and unique landscaping. Every few minutes you find yourself immersed in a new environment. In one yard you will be walking on flagstone pavers through formal French gardens, and the next on a crushed stone path through woodlands. Some homeowners have maintained their section of the path with dignity and care - offering solid pavers, delightful gardens, and artistic flourishes. However, other homeowners aren't with the program - doing the bare minimum to provide public access through thickets on footpaths pushed so close to the lake as to be one gulp away from swimming in it. The shore path meanders along the lakeshore, crossing the front lawns of lakefront estates, association beaches, and public parks. The terrain is meant for walkers and varies from grass to dirt to brick and concrete. The entire shore path is just over 20 miles in length and takes 8 to 10 hours to walk. WHAT TO EXPECT While it may be tempting to admire the beauty of the homes and gardens you see around the lake a bit closer, homeowners politely request that visitors be respectful and remain on the path and not venture into their lawns, gardens, piers or boathouses. Here are a few more things to keep in mind to enjoy your the Geneva Lake Shore Path experience to its fullest: The ideal way to hike the Shore Path is to wear sturdy shoes with a good tread to prevent slipping. Path surfaces vary from grass, cement and brick to wood, stepping stones and gravel. Some areas are hilly, narrow or wind through wooded areas close to the shoreline. Walk with care! Bicycles, skates/skateboards and motorized vehicles are not permitted on the Shore Path. Strollers are not recommended as portions of the path can be uneven. Dogs are welcome on the path as long as they are leashed and picked up after. The Shore Path should be used during daylight hours only. Please leave the path with what you brought and deposit trash in public receptacles after your walk. Public restrooms and water fountains can be found along the Shore Path at the VISIT Lake Geneva Information Center (Lake Geneva), Edgewater Park (Williams Bay), Reid Park (Fontana) and Big Foot Beach State Park (Lake Geneva). RECOMMENDATIONS FOR WALKING THE SHORE PATH The shore path is a big undertaking to walk in one try. It takes an average of 8 to 10 hours for someone who is in average physical shape to make the 21-26 mile journey around Geneva Lake. There are public access points in Lake Geneva, Fontana, Williams Bay and at Big Foot Beach State Park. Please note that walking on private property is not permitted. The easiest place to walk is starting at Elm Park in Downtown Lake Geneva. The Geneva Lake Shore Path is something that everyone should take a walk through at some point in their lives. You are sure to discover something new each time you walk it, and the scenes are constantly changing throughout the seasons from the bloom of spring to the ever changing colors of fall it is a site to see!
