Kilkenny Ridge Race

About the Event

Kilkenny Ridge Race: A Journey Through Wild White Mountains
Embark on an unforgettable adventure through the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest with the Kilkenny Ridge Race. This challenging trail race offers runners two distance options, each providing a unique experience in one of the most remote and rugged landscapes in the Northeast.
The 50-mile route begins at South Pond Recreation Area near Stark and traverses over to Jefferson before returning via the same path for a total elevation gain of approximately 15,000 feet. Along this journey, runners will ascend two iconic peaks — Mount Cabot and Mount Waumbek — as well as several lesser-known but equally spectacular summits such as The Bulge, The Horn, and Mount Starr King.
For those seeking a slightly shorter yet no less thrilling experience, the 25-mile race starts at Jefferson Inn off Route 2. Participants will travel south along the Kilkenny Ridge Trail to South Pond Recreation Area, encountering over 7,000 feet of climbing en route. A third option is available in the form of a scenic 25K run from Berlin Fish Hatchery back to South Pond.
All routes follow the well-maintained but unmarked Kilkenny Ridge Trail, requiring runners to rely on detailed maps and GPS tracks provided by race organizers during bib pickup at the start area. The remote nature of this course demands careful preparation; participants must bring their own hydration systems as no disposable cups will be supplied at aid stations.
In addition to individual achievements, racers have an opportunity to compete for recognition within the White Mountain Endurance Cup series, which includes three other sub-ultra distance events across New Hampshire. Complete at least three of these races and earn a commemorative medal while vying for top male and female spots as King or Queen of the Mountains.
Whether you're aiming for personal bests on rugged terrain or simply immersing yourself in nature's splendor, prepare to be captivated by this wild and wooly adventure. Bracing against unpredictable mountain weather with essential gear at hand, each step brings you closer not just to your goal but also to a profound connection with the untamed beauty of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
Join us for an unparalleled celebration of endurance and wilderness exploration on race day!
