The geography of the course is defined by its extreme altitude and rugged Himalayan terrain. Runners navigate through a vertical gradient that transitions from dense alpine forests to boulder-strewn glacial zones. The 50K category is particularly formidable, requiring participants to climb a total of 3,700 meters, reaching altitudes where air pressure and oxygen levels are significantly lower than at sea level. Given the high-altitude nature of the Sikkim mountains, weather conditions are highly variable; while Yuksom sits in a temperate zone, the upper reaches of the Goechala trail can experience freezing temperatures and sudden mist even in late spring. Proper acclimatization is considered a critical safety requirement for this event.
Logistically, the organizers recommend that all athletes arrive in Yuksom at least two days before the start to adjust to the elevation. The race is part of the JBG Endura Races series and is organized by Sportiz. As ITRA-certified courses, both the 30K and 50K distances provide official points for finishers, allowing them to qualify for major international trail racing circuits. The event utilizes RFID timing technology to track runners across the remote mountain checkpoints. Beyond the technical challenges, the race emphasizes the "transformative" experience of running in the presence of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world.
