The Indian Ocean Challenge is an exhilarating 9-marathon series spanning nine countries across South and Southeast Asia, offering runners an unforgettable journey through diverse landscapes and cultures. The challenge begins on February 15, 2027, with the Myanmar Yangon Marathon in Kandawgyi Park, adjacent to the Wyndham Grand Yangon hotel, and concludes on March 8, 2027, at Bhutan's Thimphu Marathon.
Each race is meticulously planned to minimize travel time between countries, ensuring participants can seamlessly transition from one marathon to another. The series includes stops in Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Vientiane (Laos), Colombo and Chennai (Sri Lanka/India options), Male (Maldives), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Dili (Timor Leste), Bali (Indonesia), and Thimphu (Bhutan).
The courses are designed to be scenic yet manageable, with most events taking place in city parks or along picturesque waterfronts. For instance, the Phnom Penh Marathon features Sisowath Riverside Park's lush greenery, while runners in Vientiane will enjoy a night race around Chao Anouvong Park under moonlit skies.
Participants can choose to run as many marathons as they wish, with separate registrations for each event. Early bird registration guarantees a finisher medal and an official time posted online, but spots are limited to 20 runners per country due to the intimate nature of these races. Runners who sign up for four or more countries will receive a special challenge medal.
Safety is paramount in this series. Courses are evaluated multiple times by race directors using GPS devices to ensure accuracy and safety for all participants. Mandatory briefings take place at each host hotel on the evening before the event, providing crucial information about course details, local conditions, and emergency procedures.
