Independence Run 5k

About the Event

Join us for a great community 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk/Run to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of our Nation!
The race is Sunday July 5th, on the beautiful Greater Allegany Trail (GAP) in Frostburg, MD. The 5k race will begin at 9:00 am, and the 1 mile Walk/Run a few minutes after. Registration, t-shirt, and number pick-up opens at 7:30 am. Both races consist of an out and back on the GAP trail starting at the bottom of the switchbacks at the Depot in Frostburg and running West half the distance out and then back. Gradual incline up with a decline to the finish. Pre-Race Day Registration is $25 for adults and $20 for children. Same Day registration will be available for $30. Refreshments, Giveaways, and Awards will be given at the after party at City Place!  Money from race will go to fund Frostburg State University's Children Literature Center which sponsors so many of our treasured community events! https://www.frostburg.edu/childrens-literature-centre/index.php

Parking Information: Please note that parking is limited near the Trail Head and Thrasher Carriage Museum. Priority parking is reserved for volunteers, individuals with disabilities, and families with young children. We kindly ask all other participants to park behind St. Michael’s at the free Public Parking lot or by the two public parking lots by City Place. A shuttle service will begin at 7:30 AM and will run every 15 minutes to and from these parking lots to the trailhead.  Alternatively, you may park on Main Street and enjoy a short walk down to the trail. For those dropping off participants, the depot is available for convenient drop-off access. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

After Party & Awards Ceremony:  This year, our award ceremony will be held at City Place with music, refreshments, giveaways, and awards. We will be announcing the awards for the following age groups/categories:
Age Groups: 10 and under; 11-15, 16-19, 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60 and over
Awards: Overall male and female 5K; male and female masters; Top three finishers per age/gender group in 5K
Ribbons to all kids 10 and under plus mile participants

We will be accepting additional donations with online and same day registration to benefit the Frostburg State University Children's Literature Center!  It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the 4th of July weekend with the community and enjoy a great time together.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Scenic view of

Frostburg, often referred to as Mountain City, is a charming little town tucked in Allegany County, Western Maryland. The town is home to Frostburg State University and has a lively variety of student-oriented pubs. Frostburg has a slow, but rich history. Being one of the primary coach stops along the historic National Road, the town is built centered along Route 40 and is truly a Main Street community. The town is positioned in the Appalachian mountains, and its best attraction is its natural surroundings. From the center of town, once can take in a gorgeous, panoramic view of the surroundings mountains. Because of this natural setting, a wide range of outdoor, recreational activities are easily within reach. Frostburg is one of the primary stops along the Rails to Trails cycle path which connects Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. Garrett County is just minutes away by car and is the least-densely populated region in Maryland, offering excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling, mountain-biking, kayaking, white-water rafting, skiing, and many other outdoor pursuits.
