Reclaim Your Health. Reclaim Your Narrative.
In East New York, our health is often reduced to a statistic. With a 40% obesity rate—the highest in New York City—many of our neighbors have been defined by their medical charts. We are told we are "diabetic," "hypertensive," or "at-risk."
This May, Rare Fitness invites you to join a movement that proves we are more than a medical label. The "I am not my diagnosis" 5K is not just a race; it is a community-wide declaration of health, resilience, and identity. Whether you are managing a chronic condition, beginning your fitness journey, or are a seasoned athlete, this event is designed for you.
Why We Run Founded by Jalen Smalls (NASM-CPT, Precision Nutrition Coach), Rare Fitness was built on the belief that professional-grade fitness and nutrition education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their zip code or financial status. Having served the community at Gateway Estates Park and the Prince Joshua Avitto Community Center, we are taking our mission to the pavement to fight obesity and cardiovascular disease together.
What to Expect
The Experience: A high-energy 5K (3.1 miles) route through the heart of our community.

By participating, you aren't just crossing a finish line—you are helping Rare Fitness continue to provide low-to-no-cost wellness programming for all of Brooklyn.
