Hill of Alyth Local Event

Welcome to TAY's latest local orienteering event at the scenic Hill of Alyth. This captivating venue, remapped for precision in 2024 and updated slightly in 2025, offers an array of challenging terrains that cater to all skill levels.
The course features a mix of tricky contoured areas and thick gorse patches, presenting significant navigation challenges throughout the run. The extensive path network allows participants to choose their routes wisely, while newcomers can opt for smoother tracks and paths on easier courses designed specifically for them.
Car parking is available in nearby farmers' fields at a £3 charge per vehicle; please bring cash as there are no facilities onsite for handling payments. From the car park, it's an approximately 15-minute uphill walk to reach the start/finish area where all activities will be centered around the assembly arena.
Participants should note that while Hill of Alyth offers breathtaking views over Strathmore and north towards the Grampian hills, its exposed nature can make for unpredictable weather conditions. Dress appropriately with cagoules mandatory if forecasts predict inclement weather. Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times to ensure safety for everyone.
For those uncertain about which course suits them best:
- The Yellow course is perfect for younger children accompanied by an adult or regular orienteers who prefer easier paths.

- Light Green caters to individuals with some navigation experience, offering less physically demanding terrain.

- Green challenges experienced navigators and seasoned runners alike, providing a rigorous test of skill.
A Score event will also be available, where participants aim to accumulate as many points as possible within 60 minutes by visiting controls in any order. Late finishers beyond the time limit face penalties, adding an extra layer of strategic planning to this format.
Registration opens between 11am and 12:30pm, allowing you ample preparation before your start time. The event is popular with dog walkers and mountain bikers, so keep a lookout for other trail users while navigating through the landscape.
