Hellbender 100

The Hellbender 100 is a "graduate level" ultramarathon taking place on Friday, May 8, 2026, in Old Fort, North Carolina. Organized by the nonprofit RUN828 Foundation, the race is a designated qualifier for both the Hardrock 100 and Western States 100. Due to the impact of Hurricane Helene, the 2026 event will likely utilize an alternative course that combines sections of the 2025 and original routes while maintaining a high degree of technical difficulty.

The Hellbender 100 is recognized as one of the most grueling 100-milers on the East Coast, featuring massive elevation changes and a summit of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.

The geography of Southern Appalachia in early May is characterized by unpredictable weather and rapid temperature shifts. Consequently, race officials enforce a strict mandatory gear list for both runners and pacers. This includes a seam-sealed waterproof jacket, an emergency bivy (blankets are not sufficient), an insulating long-sleeve base layer, a water filter, and a GPS unit provided by the race. Gear checks are conducted prior to the start and at multiple points throughout the course. The event operates on a "cupless" basis to minimize environmental impact, providing runners with a reusable cup in their swag bags.

Logistically, the race begins at 5:00 AM at Camp Grier. The course traverses the Black Mountains and deep valleys, requiring high-intensity climbing and descent. To support the endurance effort, stocked aid stations provide various foods, and finishers receive a commemorative buckle, with special awards for those finishing in under 24 hours. The RUN828 Foundation utilizes race proceeds to support WNC nonprofits that promote healthy, outdoor activities. Registration is inclusive, accepting self-declared gender categories for male, female, and transgender/non-binary participants.
