Hanwell Hammering

The Hanwell Hammering returns to the trails of Hanwell, New Brunswick, for its 2026 edition. This Viking-themed trail running event is scheduled for Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the Hanwell Recreation Park. As of April 3, 2026, there are 85 participants registered, with 65 spots remaining across the various distance categories. Notably, this is the first race in New Brunswick to be recognized as a UTMB Index race, allowing participants to improve their standing for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc lottery.

Hanwell is a rapidly growing rural community located just southwest of Fredericton, the provincial capital. As of the 2021 census, Hanwell had a population of approximately 4,700 residents, representing a growth of 5.3% over five years. The community is predominantly characterized by young families and professionals who commute to Fredericton. The demographic makeup is largely of European descent (95.1%), with Indigenous (1.8%), Black or African American (0.7%), and South Asian (0.5%) residents comprising the community. The median household income in Hanwell is approximately CA$112,000, one of the highest in the province.

The local culture is centered on the Hanwell Recreation Park, which serves as a vital green space for the community. The trails are maintained through local volunteer efforts, reflecting the village spirit of Hanwell. The Dutch Viking Events organization emphasizes a friendly yet challenging atmosphere, incorporating lore of the village resisting a Viking invasion. This event has become a point of pride for the village, showcasing its transition from a commuter suburb to an active municipality with its own distinct identity.

The Hanwell Hammering is a cup-less event, requiring all participants to carry their own hydration vessels. An aid station at the start/finish area provides water and nutrition, and the Hanwell Community Centre serves as the primary hub for race kit pickup, bag drops, and post-race showers. To support the physical demands of the "hammering," massage students from Eastern College are on-site Saturday to assist runners. Parking is limited at the Nature Park Drive entrance, so participants are directed to Hanwell Park Academy once the main lot is full. By May 2nd, the trails will host regional athletes vying for victory against the Viking invasion and the challenging terrain.
