Hades Hill Fell Race

Hades Hill Race, set for Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 6:45 PM, promises an exhilarating journey through rugged terrain that challenges even the most seasoned runners. This annual event is part of both the Run the Moors Inter-Club's Fell Grand Prix and the Rochdale Harriers' Fell Championships, making it a significant fixture in the fell running calendar.
The race begins at The Red Lion Public House in Whitworth, Lancashire (OL12 8PY), where participants will gather to embark on an 8-kilometer course with nearly 360 meters of ascent. The route is designed as a rollercoaster ride through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the region, including Brown Wardle and Hades Hill.
The initial stretch features a steep uphill climb that tests runners' endurance right from the start. Once past this grueling section, the terrain levels out before taking on more challenging ascents at Middle Hill and Hades Hill itself. The final part of the race sees competitors retracing their steps back to the finish line above the starting point.
Given the late hour when the event takes place, a strict cut-off has been implemented for safety reasons: runners must reach the summit of Brown Wardle within 24 minutes from the start or risk being withdrawn. This equates to maintaining an uphill pace that is not for the faint-hearted—approximately 18.5 minutes per mile.
Participants are advised to bring mandatory Fell Running Association (FRA) kit, which includes a waterproof whole-body cover with taped seams and integrated hood, hat, gloves, map of the route, compass, whistle, and emergency food. Race organizers will decide on race day whether these requirements can be relaxed based on weather conditions.
Entry fees are £9 for FRA members and £10 for non-members. The event has a storied history dating back to 1968, with notable records set by C Holdsworth (30:15) in the men's category and H Glover (37:04) in the women’s division.
