On November 1, 2026, the Paiou Half Marathon and the fifth running of the Castanodasos Race will take place in the picturesque town of Paiou, located in Kilkis Prefecture. This annual event celebrates its fourteenth edition as a powerful statement against destructive mining projects that threaten the natural beauty and integrity of this region.
The race is dedicated to preserving nature and promoting sustainable practices. Participants are invited to explore the stunning landscapes around Paiou, including charming villages, serene monasteries, lush forests, and scenic hiking trails. The event aims to highlight the rich biodiversity of the area while raising awareness about environmental conservation efforts.
Paiou Half Marathon starts at 10:00 AM with a course that winds through rolling hills and picturesque countryside, offering runners breathtaking views as they navigate the challenging terrain. Meanwhile, the 5km Castanodasos Race begins just fifteen minutes later at 10:15 AM. Both races conclude in the early afternoon, providing ample time for participants to enjoy Paiou's vibrant atmosphere.
The event is closely aligned with the "XESKOURIA...ZOE" (Let It Be...) race held in Kakkavo, emphasizing solidarity and support for communities fighting against environmental threats. This year’s edition celebrates the resilience of local residents who continue their struggle to protect their homeland from industrial encroachment.
Participants can collect their bib numbers on November 1, between 8:00 AM and 9:45 AM at the event headquarters near Prophet Elias Castaneris Square in Paiou. Detailed instructions for reaching the starting point are provided:
- For those arriving via Egnatia Highway (Eastern Macedonia and Thrace): Follow signs to Edessa through Titana, then continue towards Agios Athanasios, passing through Euzonos/Polykastro before heading toward Goumenissa and Griva. After a short left turn at Castaneris Square, you will arrive at Prophet Elias Castaneris.
- For travelers from the Thessaloniki Prefecture: Follow signs to Edessa via Agios Athanasios and Polykastro, then proceed through Goumenissa towards Griva before reaching Castaneris. Turn left after passing Castaneris Square to reach your destination at Prophet Elias Castaneris.
- For those coming from the Monasteries Highway in Thessaloniki: Head toward Euzonos/Polykastro, then continue through Polykastro and Goumenissa before reaching Griva. After a left turn near Castaneris Square, you will reach your destination at Prophet Elias Castaneris.
- For participants arriving from southern Greece via Malgarons Interchange: Take the exit to Euzonos after 40 kilometers, then follow signs through Polykastro and Goumenissa before reaching Griva. After turning left near Castaneris Square, you will arrive at Prophet Elias Castaneris.
- For those traveling from western Greece via Egnatia Highway: Exit towards Alexandroupolis, passing through Giannitsa, then continue to Goumenissa and Griva. Follow signs through Polykastro and Goumenissa before reaching your destination near Prophet Elias Castaneris Square in Paiou.
