The Gulch Countdown returns to Mukilteo, Washington on June 13th, offering a unique twist on endurance racing in the serene forests of Japanese Gulch. This Last Person Standing race invites runners from all ability levels to explore the scenic trail loop that winds through lush ferns and towering cedars. On a typical June day in Mukilteo, the air carries a cool mist as runners make their way along Japanese Gulch’s winding trails. With each lap around the 2.18-mile loop, the atmosphere thickens with anticipation and camaraderie. The race format is designed to push even the most seasoned athletes while also welcoming newcomers who are looking for an engaging experience. As dusk falls over the gulch on this early summer evening, the final moments of competition evoke a sense of community and shared accomplishment.
Since its inception in 2017, the Gulch Countdown has become more than just a race; it's a tradition that celebrates both endurance and camaraderie among runners from Mukilteo and beyond. The Gulch Countdown unfolds on a well-marked 2.18-mile loop within Japanese Gulch’s dense forest setting. The terrain is predominantly soft and firm, with rolling hills that challenge runners' stamina while remaining accessible to various skill levels. The start/finish line for the Gulch Countdown is located at 1014 Hill Street in Mukilteo. The course features a series of loops, with each subsequent lap becoming progressively shorter and more intense as runners vie to be the Last Person Standing. Aid stations are positioned throughout the route, offering essential hydration and energy replenishment.
Weather conditions during June typically feature mild temperatures ranging from 15.8°C on average, with occasional gusts reaching up to 9.1 mph. Runners should expect firm yet slightly soft trail surfaces that may become more slippery in certain sections due to moisture. Bib pick-up will be held at 1014 Hill Street in Mukilteo on race day morning from 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM for all participants. Runners should bring a photo ID and their confirmation email receipt if they have not already received a bib during pre-race pickup.
