Great Wall Marathon

The Great Wall Marathon, organized by Albatros Adventure Marathons, is the most established international event on the wall. Scheduled for May 16, 2026, this race is held at the Huangyaguan section of the Great Wall in Tianjin. Since starting in 1999 with 350 runners, it has grown into a premier sell-out event capped at 2,500 participants from around the globe.

The hallmark of this specific race is the 5,164 historic steps that runners must conquer. The course is a technical mix of steep stone staircases, asphalt roads, and gravel paths through local villages. Because of the extreme physical toll—often referred to as "the most demanding marathon of your life"—the finishing times are significantly longer than standard road races, with even experienced runners expecting a grueling, multi-hour ordeal.

For international participants, entry is traditionally tied to multi-day tour packages to ensure proper logistics and support in the Jizhou region. These packages range from the 6-Day standard (starting at $1,690 USD) to the comprehensive 7-Day Beijing experience ($1,990 USD). These tours include accommodation, guided sightseeing at the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven, and full race-day support including official timing, medals, and recovery services.
