Gotland Run – 511K (2027) The First Fifth Anniversary
About the Event
Gotland Run 511k invites runners to embrace the spirit of adventure and self-discovery as they traverse one of Sweden's most picturesque islands. This unique journey is not just a race but an exploration, inspired by the legendary Vol State 500k, where participants push their limits while navigating Gotland’s diverse landscapes on foot. The route begins in Visby, the medieval capital with its cobblestone streets and ancient walls, before looping around the island. Runners will cover approximately 318 miles (511 km) over a period of up to ten days, averaging about 51 kilometers per day. The course follows Gotlandsleden for much of its length, featuring stretches of asphalt roads, gravel paths, and scenic trails that wind through open meadows and past historic churches. Participants are encouraged to travel like vagabonds, seeking shelter in local communities along the way or setting up camp wherever they find suitable resting spots. Angel Stations, often run by volunteers, offer essential support such as water, food, and sometimes even a place for a brief rest during their arduous journey around Gotland. Before embarking on this epic adventure, runners are treated to a pre-race dinner in Visby where the event's rules and logistics are discussed. Accommodation is provided at the historic Visby Fängelse Hostel located near the ferry terminal, with breakfast served on race day. Throughout their run, participants must adhere to strict guidelines including mandatory check-ins twice daily via an online tool. Upon completion of the 511k journey within ten days, runners are celebrated as finishers and receive a commemorative souvenir. Those who drop out can be picked up by organizers from any point along the route, ensuring their safe return to Visby. Gotland Run 511k is more than just an athletic challenge; it's an opportunity for personal growth, connecting with nature, and immersing oneself in the rich history of Gotland. The event celebrates those who dare to explore beyond conventional boundaries, fostering a sense of camaraderie among participants as they tackle this formidable journey together. The race is designed to test one’s physical endurance while also nurturing mental resilience. With each step taken across rugged terrain and through charming villages, runners uncover not only the beauty of Gotland but also their own inner strength.
