Gormire Gamble Fell Race

Gormire Gamble Fell Race, hosted by Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers, promises an exhilarating day for fell runners of all levels on October 18, 2026. Situated within the picturesque North York Moors National Park at Sutton Bank Visitor Centre (YO7 2EH), this challenging race covers a distance of 9 kilometers with a significant climb of 250 meters.
Registration takes place from 9:30am to 10:45am, where participants must pick up their numbers and complete the necessary formalities. The race itself begins at 11am sharp, setting runners off on an adventure that requires careful navigation through varied terrain including both road and trail sections.
Participants should be prepared for a course marked as partially navigated (PM), with some reliance on local knowledge to aid in route finding (LK). Navigational skills are essential due to the race's nature under Fell Runner Association rules, which prohibit the use of GPS navigation during the event.
Safety is paramount at Gormire Gamble. All runners must carry a full set of FRA Mandatory Minimum Kit items: waterproof clothing with taped seams and an attached hood, hat, gloves, map, compass (no electronic devices), whistle, and emergency food. Random kit checks will ensure compliance throughout the race day.
The route features tree branches, roots, and muddy sections that test runners' agility and endurance as they traverse through rugged landscapes. The course is designed to be both challenging and rewarding, with stunning views of North Yorkshire's countryside along the way.
Prizes are awarded based on age categories at the start of the Winter Series (11/10/26), including open male and female divisions, senior classes for U23 competitors, and five-year age bands from V40 upwards. Team prizes will also be given to encourage camaraderie among participants.
To minimize environmental impact and promote sustainability, runners are encouraged to carpool or share rides with fellow racers due to parking charges at the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre. The visitor centre offers toilet facilities that open at 9am and a coffee shop for pre-race refreshments.
