Go the Distance for Crime Victims

The 20th Annual Go the Distance for Crime Victims is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2026, in Marion, IA. This milestone event raises critical funds to assist victims with the financial burdens and costs incurred as a result of victimization. Hosted at Thomas Park, the race is a collaborative community effort involving local law enforcement and advocacy groups. In Iowa, crime victim compensation programs play a vital role in recovery; in a recent fiscal year, the state’s Victim Compensation Fund paid out over $5.5 million in claims to assist victims with medical care, counseling, and lost wages, highlighting the ongoing need for the support provided by this annual run.

Participation and Logistics

The event is centered at Thomas Park, with race day check-in and chip timer pickup beginning at 7:00 AM. To streamline the morning of the race, participants can opt for early race bag pickup on Friday, April 17th, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Cedar Rapids Police Department (505 1st St SW). The 5K utilizes chip timing, and results will be delivered directly to participants via text message. To be eligible for door prizes and to guarantee a commemorative event shirt (available for a $10 add-on), participants must register by April 7, 2026. Late registrations will be accepted on-site until 8:45 AM on the morning of the race.

Awards and Recognition

Trophies will be awarded to the Overall Male and Female finishers. Additionally, the event features deep age-group recognition, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals provided for both male and female participants in categories ranging from "Up to 13" through "60+," as well as a dedicated category for walkers. This inclusive awards structure encourages participation from across the Cedar Rapids and Marion metropolitan areas, from competitive youth runners to active seniors.

Registration and Fees

The standard registration fee for the 5K Run/Walk is $28.74 (inclusive of all fees). Families are encouraged to participate, as a $15 discount is automatically applied at checkout for all children ages 13 and under. The event has set a fundraising goal of $5,000 to bolster victim advocacy programs, with 5 participants currently registered.
