Course and Cultural Immersion
The race begins at the "Crossroads of Cultures" in Samarkand and concludes at the sandstone fortress of Nur, originally commissioned by Alexander the Great in 327 BC. Participants experience a deep dive into Central Asian life, spending nights in local villages, traditional yurt camps, and remote mountain valley campsites. The terrain is highly varied, spanning rivers, lakeshores, steppes, and deserts, providing a comprehensive tour of Uzbekistan's diverse geography. The post-race celebration takes place in Bukhara, another UNESCO Heritage City famous for its blue-domed madrasas and the Kalyan Minaret.
Logistics and Preparation
Registration for the 2026 edition is currently open following a successful inaugural event. Because of the technical nature of the terrain and the remote locations, GlobalLimits provides coaching resources and specific medical guidelines for competitors. The event emphasizes "Doing Good" through charitable partnerships within the regions they traverse. Competitors are encouraged to book extension programs and hotels through the official portal to facilitate travel between the ancient cities of the Silk Road.
Demographic and National Context
Uzbekistan is a country of approximately 36 million people, characterized by a young and rapidly growing population. The ethnic composition is roughly 84.4% Uzbek, 4.8% Russian, 2.4% Tajik, 2.2% Kazakh, and 1.5% Karakalpak. The nation has a high literacy rate of nearly 100% and a median household income that has been rising steadily, currently estimated around $3,500 to $4,500 annually in purchasing power parity. This cultural backdrop of hospitality and ancient tradition is a central pillar of the GlobalLimits experience, as the race relies on the infrastructure of local communities for its stage camps.

Learn more about the host city, Samarkand.
Samarkand is the city that is the bejewelled crown of the Silk Road, a rhapsody of ornate Islamic architecture with turquoise domes and soaring tiled minarets. It's one of the twin pillars of the Samarkand through Bukhara region of Uzbekistan, and a must-see destination. With a population of 585,000 in 2024 and as many again in the broader metropolis, much of Samarkand is blandly modern, but its extensive Old Town has been well-preserved, and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
