The geography of the course offers a dramatic vertical profile, ascending from sea level to the ancient defensive fortifications (the "Forti di Genova") that crown the city's surrounding ridges. Runners traverse narrow "caruggi" (alleys) and steep "creuze" (cobbled paths) before entering the technical limestone and shale single-track trails of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri. In early May, Genoa typically experiences mild Mediterranean spring conditions with average temperatures around 18°C (64°F). However, the coastal mountains are prone to rapid weather changes, often bringing "macaia" (damp sea fog) or sudden wind shifts that can significantly drop temperatures at the highest points of the 45 km course.
