Freedom Run 2026

The Freedom Run 2026 returns to Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, July 4th, aiming to raise funds for The American Warrior Initiative through a virtual 5K run or walk.
Participants can choose their own path in this flexible race. Whether you prefer running along the picturesque trails of Picnic Point Park or completing your distance at home using an indoor treadmill, every participant is encouraged to join. This event supports thousands of community heroes who have served our country and deserve assistance for their sacrifices.
The tradition of AWI Freedom Run dates back several years in Madison. Since its inception, it has brought together local residents and military veterans alike to contribute towards a worthy cause. In 2026, the race will see hundreds of participants coming from various neighborhoods around Madison, making it one of the city's most anticipated community events.
The course venue offers firm yet slightly soft terrain that can be challenging but manageable for all skill levels. The route is laid out in such a way to take runners through some scenic areas and back into familiar territory. Notable features include passing by the Capitol Square, providing stunning views of Lake Monona on your return journey.
Race morning finds participants gathering at various locations around Madison or from the comfort of their own homes for virtual participation. The start time is typically early in the day, with runners setting off before dawn to ensure they have the best conditions possible. The elevation change is minimal but noticeable, providing a slight challenge that adds to the overall experience.
On race morning, expect temperatures ranging between 70°F and 85°F (21°C - 30°C) which can feel quite warm with an UV index of Very High at 8.0. A light breeze may help mitigate some discomfort but be prepared for a humid environment that might make the run slightly more strenuous.

For first-timers or those new to the event, it's important to arrive with your race number pinned securely. Age requirements are flexible as long as participants meet a minimum age of 13 years old.
