Fast Track Trail Race

About the Event

The Fast Track Trail Race returns to George Wyth State Park in Waterloo, Iowa on September 26, 2026, inviting runners of all levels to explore the park’s well-maintained dirt single-track trails. This event, now in its fifth year, offers a scenic and challenging course that winds through dense woods, expansive prairies, and along picturesque lakefront sections within the state park.
Race morning typically sees clear skies with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 26°C as runners gather around Canfield Shelter for the start. The atmosphere is friendly and low-key, suitable for both competitive racers and those seeking a more relaxed trail experience. Post-race festivities include food and drinks near the finish line area where participants can enjoy Casey's breakfast pizza.
Since its inception in 2018, the Fast Track Trail Race has become an integral part of Waterloo’s running community calendar. With up to 350 runners expected this year across both distances, it supports local charities while fostering a sense of camaraderie among trail enthusiasts. The race continues to grow as more individuals discover its unique blend of scenic beauty and competitive spirit.
George Wyth State Park provides the perfect backdrop for the Fast Track Trail Race with its well-maintained trails that offer smooth dirt single-track paths ideal for beginners or experienced racers looking to maintain a swift pace. For those tackling the 25K distance, an additional loop adds pacing challenges without technical obstacles, allowing runners familiarization and strategic planning.
Aid station support is limited but strategically placed at the start/finish area and the beginning of the second loop for longer-distance participants. Runners are advised to carry their own hydration and nutrition as on-course provision can be minimal; however, water, electrolyte options, and fuel choices will still be available. The race encourages a spirit of self-sufficiency, making it approachable yet challenging.
Weather conditions in September tend towards comfortable temperatures with average wind speeds around 12 km/h, humidity levels at approximately 68%, and little risk of significant rainfall (about 1mm expected). UV index is moderate at level 5. Trail surface conditions are generally hard and dry, ensuring good traction throughout the race.
The Fast Track Trail Race offers a choice between two distances: the 13K for runners seeking a shorter yet scenic challenge, and the 25K to test endurance on double the trails. Both races provide an opportunity to experience George Wyth State Park’s natural beauty while contributing to local community support.
