Nestled in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores archipelago remains one of Earth’s best-kept secrets. Historically secluded and largely untouched by mass tourism, these nine enchanting islands—São Miguel, Santa Maria, Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores, and Corvo—are a haven for nature enthusiasts seeking unspoiled landscapes and serene beauty. The largest of the Azores is São Miguel Island, stretching 64.7 kilometers long with an average width ranging from 8 to 15 kilometers. Home to approximately 140,000 residents, this island boasts diverse terrain shaped by its three prominent mountain ranges: Tronqueira Mountain, Fogo Mountain, and Sete Cidades Mountain. These peaks run in an east-west direction, separated by a low-lying plateau known as the Picos area. EPIC Azores by Decathlon invites trail runners to explore this breathtaking island through five distinct competitive events, each offering unique challenges and scenic routes: The EPIC100 is an ultra-endurance event that spans 100.7 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 5830 meters. Starting in the picturesque village of Nordeste and finishing at the Açor Arena pavilion in Vila Franca do Campo, this grueling race winds through rugged landscapes and pristine coastal areas. For those seeking an equally challenging but slightly shorter experience, the EPIC60 covers a distance of 62.6 kilometers with 3120 meters of elevation gain, starting from Furnas village and concluding at Vila Franca do Campo’s Açor Arena pavilion. The EPIC30 is designed for trail runners who prefer a more manageable yet still exhilarating challenge. This event stretches over 33.2 kilometers with an ascent totaling 1820 meters, beginning in Água de Pau village and ending at the same finish line as its longer counterparts. For those looking to sample the beauty of São Miguel without committing to such extensive distances, the EPIC15 offers a trail sprint category covering 15.1 kilometers with an elevation gain of 720 meters. This event also starts in Água de Pau and concludes at Vila Franca do Campo. To commemorate its tenth anniversary, EPIC Azores will host a special edition Ultimate Challenge: the EPIC100 Miles. While details are scarce for this unique event, it promises to be an unforgettable experience for seasoned trail runners looking for something extraordinary. Each race offers not just physical challenges but also profound connections with nature and local culture. As participants traverse through lush forests, volcanic landscapes, and charming villages, they will witness firsthand why the Azores is recognized as one of the world’s premier destinations for sustainable tourism by National Geographic Traveller.
