Dirty German Endurance Fest

The Dirty German Endurance Fest is an urban ultramarathon held within Pennypack Park in Philadelphia. Scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, the event attracts over 600 runners annually. Despite being located within city limits, the course is set in a secluded park environment featuring large old trees, diverse wildlife, and scenic views along Pennypack Creek.

The event is structured around a 25K loop system. Participants in the 50K distance complete two loops, while those in the 50-mile category complete three loops plus a marked 1-mile "dog leg" section during each circuit. The race enforces a firm 12.5-hour time limit for the 50-mile event.

The course is located at the Pine Road entry of Pennypack Park. It is designed to be beginner-friendly and fast, consisting primarily of smooth single-track and flat gravel trails with minimal technical obstacles. Each loop also includes approximately 1 mile of paved bike trail. While there are elevation changes, the climbs are short. In early May, Philadelphia typically sees average morning temperatures of 10°C, rising to an average high of 21°C. The course is mostly shaded, providing relief as the day warms up. The "runnable" nature of the terrain is a defining geographic characteristic, as it offers fewer sections that require power-hiking compared to typical mountain ultras.

The event features a unique German theme, reflected in both the atmosphere and the prizes. All finishers receive a zippered running jacket and a commemorative medal. The overall male and female winners receive authentic German cuckoo clocks. Age group winners and top-three finishers in various brackets receive "weather houses" from the Black Forest—traditional wooden instruments that use humidity-sensitive gut strings to predict weather changes. The post-race party features a live accordion performance and food prepared by professional chefs. Many participants bring tents and chairs to create a festival atmosphere at the finish line.

The start and finish area is situated at the Pine Road Entry of Pennypack Park (approx. 8750 Pine Road, Philadelphia, PA 19111). Registration closes on May 4, 2026. Refund requests are accepted until 30 days prior to the race via mail. The park must be vacated by 9:00 PM, which informs the strict cutoff times for the longer distances.
