Tackle the legendary slopes of the East Bay at the Diablo Trails Challenge 2026, returning to Walnut Creek, California, on Saturday, April 4, 2026. This premier trail running event is more than just a race; it is a celebration of conservation, with a portion of all entry fees directly benefiting Save Mount Diablo. For over four decades, this organization has expanded the mountain's open space from a mere 6,000 acres to over 100,000, and this event allows runners to experience that preserved beauty firsthand. Starting from the Castle Rock Regional Recreation Area, the challenge offers distances for every level of athlete, from the grueling 50K ultra-marathon to the accessible 5K trail run.
The 50K headline event kicks off at 6:30 AM PDT, taking experienced runners through some of the most technical and scenic terrain in Northern California. Those looking for shorter yet equally rewarding challenges can join the Half Marathon at 8:30 AM, the 10K at 9:00 AM, or the 5K at 9:30 AM. For athletes unable to attend in person, the Remote Runner category ensures everyone can contribute to the cause from afar. Post-race celebrations feature a legendary BBQ lunch plate from Slow Hand BBQ, available via pre-purchased tickets. With registration tiers increasing as race day approaches, trail enthusiasts are encouraged to secure their spot early to support the ongoing preservation of Mount Diablo’s majestic trails.

Learn more about the host city, Walnut Creek.
Walnut Creek is a typical, medium-sized suburban city on the western edge of Mount Diablo, about 17 miles east of Oakland in Contra Costa County. After being part of a Spanish land grant comprising several ranchos, the first Midwestern settlers of European descent in this area planted walnut trees. Some of these trees grew close to a small creek; thus, over time the locals came to call the creek "Walnut Creek," but the town was known as "The Corners." Today, Walnut Creek is mostly known for its retail and restaurant offerings. The city also boasts extensive protected open space for hiking and picnicking, as well as a predominantly sunny and warm climate with a briefly cool and wet winter.
