The Costa Rica 200 is a premier ultra-endurance event scheduled to take place from April 27 to May 2, 2026. This nonstop journey traverses the entire country of Costa Rica, starting on the Caribbean coast and finishing on the Pacific shore. The event is a proud member of the One Hundred® Endurance World Championship, attracting elite trail runners to experience one of the most biologically diverse environments on Earth. Participants navigate through 15 different microclimates, ranging from lowland jungles and river crossings to misty cloud forests and volcanic landscapes.
| Race Category | Distance | Elevation Gain (D+) | Start Date / Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Costa Rica 200 (Solo/Relay) | 211 miles (341 km) | 14,484 m | April 27, 2026 / 5:00 AM |
| La Ruta Sukia (Sprint) | 111 km | Significant (Included in 200M) | April 30, 2026 / 5:30 PM |
The geography of the race is exceptionally demanding, involving a climb from sea level to over 7,500 ft (2,300 m). A highlight of both the 200-mile and the new 111 km "Sprint" distance is the "Monster Section" of the Sukia Trail—a historic, rugged path used for mountain transit before the existence of modern roads. Weather conditions are a major factor, with temperatures fluctuating drastically between 2°C (35°F) in the highlands and 32°C (90°F) in the coastal tropical zones. Athletes are required to carry mandatory safety gear and utilize GPS tracking throughout the nonstop effort.
Logistically, the event is centered around Race Headquarters in San Jose and the finish line in Quepos. The 200-mile athletes begin their journey with a boat shuttle to the prologue start at Boca Pacuare. The 111 km distance debuts on April 30, starting in Naranjito and merging with the final technical sections of the 200-mile route. The event provides organized aid stations, sleep stations, and drop bag services. All courses officially close at 7:00 AM on May 2, followed by an award ceremony in Quepos at 10:00 AM. Beyond the competition, the race serves as a cultural expedition that supports local rural and indigenous communities through sports tourism.

Learn more about the host city, San José.
San José is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica. The undisputed cultural and economic center of Costa Rica's central valley, where most of the population lives, San José is also the most important transportation hub for domestic travel even though the international airport is in Alajuela. Many international visitors bypass San José altogether or spend only the time it takes to change from one bus to another, but its museums, cultural output and the opportunity to meet the "real Costa Rica" make it well worth staying a few days.
