Heptonstall Fell Race

The Heptonstall Fell Race invites runners to immerse themselves in the breathtaking landscapes of the upper Calder Valley. Scheduled for Saturday, January 9th, 2027, this challenging Category BL race spans an exhilarating 25 kilometers through a diverse terrain that includes steep wooded valleys, upland pastures, and untamed moorlands.
The journey begins on Heptonstall's historic cobbled main street where runners will be greeted by the local vicar before setting off into nature. The route offers a thrilling mix of terrains: sprinting down grassy slopes, battling through stretches of boggy ground, navigating dense woodlands, and racing across expansive moorland expanses.
Participants should expect to encounter some of the South Pennines' most stunning scenery as they traverse remote and picturesque landscapes. This race is not just a test of physical endurance but also an opportunity to connect with nature in its rawest form.
The Heptonstall Fell Race is organized by dedicated fell running enthusiasts who aim to give back to their community through this event. All proceeds are donated to local organizations such as the Scouts, Guides, Church, Mountain Rescue teams, and CROWs (Calderdale Rambling Organisation).
To ensure safety on the challenging terrain, participants must adhere to Fell Runners Association rules by wearing full waterproof body coverings, carrying a hat, gloves, map, compass, whistle, and emergency food. The race is restricted to individuals aged 18 or older.
Registration opens in early January at Heptonstall's adjacent church, followed by the start of the race at 11:30 AM. Post-race festivities include tea and flapjacks served immediately upon crossing the finish line, along with a prize ceremony featuring an authentic Thai curry back at the village pub.
Parking is available nearby for £1 per vehicle, with all proceeds going to support local groups that contribute significantly to maintaining this cherished event.
